November 1, 1966 the National Football League awarded its 16th franchise to New Orleans as NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle made the announcement at New Orleans' Ponchartrain Hotel... the New Orleans States-Item headline that afternoon was "N.O. Goes Pro!". December 15, 1966 John W. Mecom, Jr. becomes majority stockholder-president of franchise and December 22 Victor E. Schwenk is appointed director of player personnel. December 27th, Tom Fears is named the franchise's 1st head coach. One month later, in January 1967, New Orleans' NFL franchise adopts the nickcame "Saints" and signs former Ole Miss & LA Rams kicker Paige Cothren as their 1st player.
