As the result of an ongoing battle in several states over tax issues, DIRECTV and Dish Network have together taken legal action against the State of Utah. The lawsuit was filed as a direct result of the cooperation of a Utah subscriber who saw the tax on his satellite television service as unfair.
The problem purportedly stems from a strong lobby in several states by large cable television companies operating in those states. The cable companies claim the reduced taxes are fair because they pay local fees for ground use that are not paid by the satellite TV Utah companies.
On the other side of the coin, the satellite TV Utah companies claim that the local fees are irrelevant, and they should not be penalized for not having to use public ground for running cables since their service is provided through airwaves.

Via Directsattv.com - DIRECTV Settles with AGs for Improved Customer Service
Industry giant DIRECTV has reached a settlement with Attorney General Lisa Madigan, in a dispute over the direct satellite service 's marketing practices. According to Madigan and other state attorneys, the satellite TV provider will modify its promotional literature and make an estimated $13.25 million in refunds to customers who subscribed to these promotions in the past 4 years.
With this new agreement, DIRECTV aims to improve its customer service with regards to billing and programming. In the past, consumers expressed confusion in terms of reading their statements and the total cost of terminating service. The settlement hopes to clarify and rectify many of the problems that arose from fine print details and hidden fees.
