When one sees Starz (and we are referring to the entertainment company, not the twinkling lights one may be inclined to see after receiving a blow to the head), he or she usually thinks of movies. And while Starz movie channels are known primarily for their movie programming and on-demand services, non-subscribers may not be aware that they also offer original programming.
Current Starz original programming favorites include Martin Lawrence Presents 1st Amendment Stand Up and Head Case on Starz Comedy and Crash on Starz Cinema. As a new season of original programming begins for the likes of HBO and Showtime, another vendor of premium cable channels , Starz, is looking to expand its budget and create multiple original series of its own. In fact, Starz CEO Chris Albrecht is searching for new investors to put $250 million worth of capital in a joint venture to fund original programming, according to reports from the Financial Times.
In other news, Viacom will add Nickelodeon HD to its European offerings. CNN, meanwhile is leaning toward shows on perspective analysis, opinion and context, according to new CEO Ken Jautz. As ratings have plummeted for the former news leader, Jautz aims to make the news more compelling and fun.
