An additional 25 million homes across the U.S. will be receiving an extra channel on March 31st 2010, when the
Documentary Channel comes to DIRECTV. This expansion in the availability of the Documentary Channel, also known as DOC, is a significant increase in the coverage of this specialist factual channel. It will double the number of subscribers who are able to watch the Documentary Channel, vastly increasing the size of the audience which will be able to enjoy the varied range of documentary films that the channel screens.
The Documentary Channel provides an unparalleled opportunity to see more of the world, and to experience those elements of life that we do not encounter in our day-to-day existence. It shows previously unseen films from the most creative minds in the documentary film industry, including foreign films might never otherwise find their way to the U.S. In watching the Documentary Channel, viewers can discover how other people live across the globe, be amazed by the beauty of the natural world, or learn about the horrors and achievements of history. The Documentary Channel does not shy away from controversial topics, and it is not afraid of taking a risk on an unknown filmmaker who has created a beautiful and passionate film.
The
Documentary Channel comes to DIRECTV from March 31st, bringing a 24-hour selection of the world's best documentaries. It will continue to screen a wide range of films, including award winning documentaries and films from independent documentary makers. The Documentary Channel is committed to exploring the many wonders of the world by showing documentaries that cover all genres, from wildlife films showing the elusive creatures that inhabit the farthest reaches of the earth, to documentaries that uncover the truth behind the most complex current events. It is the only U.S. channel that provides documentaries throughout the day and night, making knowledge available to everyone, no matter when they are able to come looking for it.
DIRECTV, which is the most popular video service in the US, will screen this specialist service on Channel 263, when the Documentary Channel comes to DIRECTV. It will be available to DIRECTV subscribers who have chosen the Choice Extra and Total Choice packages. DIRECTV is a satellite service dedicated to providing high quality digital programming that is distributed through state of the art technology, including a DVR service that allows subscribers to watch programs when they choose to, rather than when the schedulers decide to show them.
The financial benefits that the increased availability will bring to the company when the Documentary Channel comes to DIRECTV will be significant, according to the channel's CEO, James Ackerman. The Discovery Channel was a public interest network from its foundation in 2006 until July 2009, when it became fully commercial. In the same year, the channel extended its agreement with the Dish Network, which continues to broadcast the Discovery Channel on Channel 197 (available to subscribers with the Classic Bronze 100 package). Approximately 21 million homes in the U.S. currently receive the Discovery Channel on the Dish Network as well as some smaller broadcasters.
