Unlike the many documentaries floating around today about the alleged perversions and drug use of the pop star, "Trials" aims the camera lens instead at the media figures who voiced the dark claims that followed Jackson to his death -- literally. Filmmakers Barry Shaw and Dana Gedrick, in their first feature-length effort, ambush the television and print media reporters camped outside the Santa Barbara courthouse and call many out for their anti-Jackson bias.
The film provides honest depictions of many media figures' outlook on the trial. Some reporters dodge the issue when Shaw and Gedrick confront them, while others freely admit that the media profit from negative coverage. "Trials" also gives an acerbic behind-the-scenes view of the cynicism and bias that is inherent in the process of news reporting. Most telling, perhaps, is the film's revelation of one commentator pre-taping a report on a guilty verdict -- before the jury had even come to a decision.
