Software and Electronics Pioneer Microsoft and Sports Giant ESPN have teamed up to offer sports fans on Xbox Live a new service. The service -
ESPN on Xbox , will allow users to access video footage of 3500 sports events on demand. Many of these events will be live. The services hosts videos from a wide variety of teams and leagues. Its library includes soccer, basketball, volleyball, golf, football, baseball and other events. Hardcore sports fans may be impressed by ESPN's inclusion of out-of-market events. Coverage of some events will be limited due to licensing restrictions. For instance, the service lacks any full-length NFL footage - yet its wealth of college games and other professional events may make up for this.
One interesting feature of ESPN on Xbox is its Kinect capability. Kinect, Microsoft's latest innovation, allows users to play, stop, fast forward and rewind videos using only their voices or a hand gesture. ESPN on Xbox have a beautifully smooth interface and an attractive design. It places users avatars inside a stadium-themed theater with big screens featuring different sports events on the walls.
Microsoft has also made the service interactive, with a feature that allows users to predict the winners of sports games and to compare their predictions with others in the Xbox Live community. Users can also see schedules and scores of multiple events in real time, while continuing to watch separate events.
What may appeal most to sports fans, however, is the service's price tag. The service is free - at least to some people. In order to access the service, users must have an Xbox Live Gold Membership, which costs just over $45.00 a year or $7.99 a month. They must also subscribe to an Internet Service Providers (ISP) that is affiliated with ESPN. Those who do not subscribe to an appropriate ISP currently have no way of accessing the service.
